Plain-English guides to windscreens and vehicle glass for drivers in Sligo and the North West

Truck, coach and plant machinery glass

Commercial vehicles spend long hours on the road and on site, so glass damage is a running cost rather than a one-off. The principles are the same as for cars, but the glass is bigger, heavier and more specialised, and a vehicle off the road costs money every hour it waits.

Lorries and vans

Truck windscreens are large laminated screens, often flat or only gently curved, and many newer trucks carry cameras and sensors behind the glass for lane departure warning and emergency braking. Those systems need recalibrating after a screen replacement, just as on a car. See windscreen calibration and ADAS.

Commercial vehicles in Ireland go through the CVRT roadworthiness test rather than the NCT. Windscreen damage that affects the driver's view, and wipers and washers that do not work properly, are tested items. Our NCT windscreen guide explains the general approach, which is similar.

Coaches and buses

Coach windscreens are among the largest single pieces of glass on the road, and many coaches use a split screen in two halves. Side windows can be bonded, double-glazed or both, and emergency exit windows have their own requirements. Because coach glass is often model-specific and bulky, it is worth knowing in advance where replacement panes can be sourced so that a coach is not left idle.

Plant machinery

Diggers, loaders and telehandlers have operator cabs glazed with toughened glass or, in some positions, polycarbonate. Some cab glass forms part of the operator protection, so replacement must match the manufacturer's specification, not just the shape. Fitting is often done on site.

Fleet insurance

Fleet and commercial vehicle policies vary widely on glass. Some include glass cover with a separate excess, some exclude it. Brokers handling fleet policies can confirm the cover in force before work starts. For the general picture see our guide to windscreen claims.
